We take you behind the scenes of our special Songs of Solidarity event recorded live at the Institute of Classical Studies. Join us as we explore what it means to create an epic for our time by bringing ancient narratives - from The Odyssey and Gilgamesh to the Mahabharata and Shahnameh- into conversation with contemporary migrant experiences.
Discover how one of Songs of Solidarity writers, poet Leo Boix is drawing on personal testimony and conversations with UNHCR Storytellers to shape new writing, introducing us to a waiting room where a returning translator and a mimicking starling explore translation, mistranslation, and the echoes of refugee voices. Rather like the way starlings murmurate and move as a collective, Dash’s new project is weaving together ancient myth and contemporary reality to show that migration is a fundamental, continuous part of the human story.
In this episode we hear from:
Josephine Burton - Artistic Director of Dash Arts
Fiona Macintosh - Professor of Classical Reception at the University of Oxford
Leo Boix - Argentine-British poet, translator and journalist
Songs of Solidarity, is a PROJEKT UTOPIA and Dash Arts co-production. We’re currently in the research and development stage with the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities, the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at University of Oxford, School of Advanced Studies, Arts Council England, Roundhouse London, Asylum Welcome and Unbound Philanthropy.
Our gratitude goes to all the wonderful international artists, academics and participants who enriched our project.
